Ace Frehley, Legendary KISS Guitarist, Dies at 74
Ace Frehley, the iconic “Spaceman” guitarist of the rock band KISS, passed away on Thursday in Morristown, New Jersey, at the age of 74. According to his representative, Lori Lousararian, Frehley’s death followed a recent fall at his home, though the exact cause has not been confirmed.
In a heartfelt statement, Frehley’s family shared their sorrow:
“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate to surround him with love, peace, and prayers. We will always cherish his laughter, kindness, and the powerful memories he gave us. His passing feels beyond comprehension — his legacy will live on forever.”
Health Issues Before His Passing
In late September, Ace Frehley canceled a concert in California after suffering another fall that required hospitalization. Although his team said he was “fine,” doctors advised him not to travel. On October 11, Frehley also canceled the rest of his 2025 tour dates due to “ongoing medical issues.”
A Key Member of KISS
Frehley was one of the original four members of KISS, alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. Known for his wild stage presence, unique makeup, and electrifying guitar solos, he helped define the band’s sound and image during their 1970s glory years.
While Simmons and Stanley wrote many of KISS’s hits, Frehley also penned several fan favorites such as “Cold Gin,” “Parasite,” “Shock Me,” and “Talk to Me.” His flashy solos and fun personality inspired countless young musicians to pick up the guitar.
In 2014, the original KISS lineup was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, honoring their lasting influence on rock music.
Tributes from Bandmates
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley expressed their sadness in a joint statement:
“We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable part of KISS during its most important years. He will always remain a part of our legacy. Our thoughts are with his wife Jeanette, his daughter Monique, and all who loved him.”
The Legacy of “Space Ace”
Nicknamed the “Spaceman” or “Space Ace,” Frehley was known for his larger-than-life stage persona and love for special effects — including smoking guitars and space-themed costumes. His style combined bluesy licks with heavy rock, shaping KISS’s signature sound.
Fans around the world are mourning the loss of one of rock’s true pioneers. Though he has left this world, Ace Frehley’s music, attitude, and influence will live on forever in the hearts of rock lovers everywhere.
