The Batman 2, The Screenwriter Speaks: "Matt Reeves Changed My Life"

From Uncredited Writer to Key Contributor

Mattson Tomlin, the creative force behind Terminator Zero and an uncredited writer on The Batman, is officially stepping into the spotlight with the upcoming sequel, The Batman 2. Despite co-writing the first film starring Robert Pattinson, Tomlin was not given formal credit due to a Writers Guild of America (WGA) decision. However, his role in the franchise is now cemented as he takes on a more prominent position in the sequel.

A Significant Call from Matt Reeves

In a recent interview, Tomlin shared the emotional journey that led to his formal inclusion in The Batman franchise. Recalling the day the first movie was released, Tomlin spoke about a pivotal conversation with director Matt Reeves. "The day the movie came out, Matt Reeves and I talked on the phone for an hour or two. I had this urge to ask, 'Are you going to ask me to do the sequel?' but I didn’t have the courage," Tomlin confessed. Instead, he focused on being a supportive friend, celebrating Reeves' success despite not receiving official credit.

Six weeks later, Tomlin received a life-changing call from Reeves. "He called me again and said, 'So, it's time for the sequel. Do you want to do it all the way this time?'" Tomlin recalled, marking the beginning of his official involvement in the franchise.

Emotional Catharsis and the Challenge Ahead

For Tomlin, joining The Batman 2 is deeply personal. "There was a tremendous emotional catharsis in my whole body because Batman means so much to me," he said. Tomlin explained that, as a creator, the goal is to make things that resonate both personally and with the audience. Despite experiencing self-doubt and impostor syndrome, Tomlin views the sequel not as an act of redemption but as a challenge to prove himself.

"I'm forever indebted to Matt Reeves. He's changed my life three times now," Tomlin added, highlighting the profound impact Reeves has had on his career.

What’s Next for The Batman Saga?

As fans eagerly await The Batman: Part 2, set to be released on October 2, 2026, the next chapter in the saga will be explored in The Penguin, a spin-off sequel TV series. The show is scheduled to premiere in Italy on September 20 on Sky and NOW, further expanding the universe established by Reeves and his team.
