Canadian Actor Graham Greene Dies at 73
Graham Greene, the Canadian First Nations actor best known for his role in Dances With Wolves, has died at the age of 73. His manager, Gerry Jordan, confirmed the news and said Greene passed away peacefully of natural causes.
Greene was a member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario. Before becoming an actor, he worked many different jobs — including as a draftsman, civil technologist, steelworker, and even part of a rock band’s crew. In the 1970s, he began acting in theatre in the UK, which he later said gave him the strong discipline needed for his film career.
His big breakthrough came in 1990 when he played Kicking Bird, a Lakota medicine man, in Kevin Costner’s film Dances With Wolves. The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and widespread praise.
Greene went on to star in many other well-known films, including Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), and Wind River (2017).
In a 2012 interview, Greene said that marrying his wife, Hilary Blackmore, was the best moment of his life.
Over his long career, he received many honors, including the Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004. In 2016, he was also made a member of the Order of Canada, the country’s second-highest civilian award.
