Edgecombe’s Record-Breaking Debut Leads Sixers to Thrilling Win
VJ Edgecombe was shocked and happy when he found out he scored more points in his first NBA game than any player since Wilt Chamberlain.
Edgecombe, a rookie for the Philadelphia 76ers, scored 34 points in his first NBA game, helping his team win 117-116 against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.
He said, “I worked my whole life for this moment. This is my dream. I prayed to make it to the NBA and stay here. This performance was more than I expected.”
Edgecombe is from the Bahamas and played one season at Baylor University, where he won Big 12 Rookie of the Year. His 34 points are the third-highest ever for a player in their NBA debut:
-
Wilt Chamberlain scored 43 points in 1959.
-
Frank Selvy scored 35 points in 1954.
Allen Iverson previously held the 76ers’ record with 30 points in his debut in 1996.
Coach Nick Nurse said, “That’s an amazing first game. It’s a special achievement.”
Edgecombe also broke another record by scoring 14 points in the first quarter, the most ever in a player’s first NBA quarter. The previous record was held by LeBron James in 2003.
Edgecombe said, “It feels great to have my name mentioned with LeBron. I hope to have a long career like him.”
In the game, Edgecombe made 13 out of 26 shots, including 5 three-pointers. He also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. He scored 10 points in a row in the first quarter and helped the team come back from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
His teammate Dominick Barlow said Edgecombe stayed very calm and composed during the game, which is rare for a rookie.
All-Star player Tyrese Maxey also scored 40 points. Together, Maxey and Edgecombe scored 74 points, the second-most points ever by two teammates in a season opener.
Maxey said Edgecombe played confidently, but he also joked with him for missing two free throws at the end of the game, shouting, “You were nervous at the free throw line!”
