Line of Duty Season 7: The BBC’s Biggest Crime Thriller is Finally Back

After nearly five years of waiting, the BBC has officially confirmed what fans have been hoping for — Line of Duty is returning for Season 7. One of Britain's most gripping crime dramas is gearing up for a brand-new chapter, with a six-episode season expected to premiere in late 2026.

The iconic trio — Vicky McClure, Martin Compston, and Adrian Dunbar — will reprise their roles as Kate Fleming, Steve Arnott, and Ted Hastings. And yes, the hunt for corruption isn’t over yet… but this time, the game has changed.

A Fresh Direction for Season 7

Creator Jed Mercurio shared his excitement at the show’s comeback, joking that since corruption was supposedly “solved” while the series was off-air, he’ll be relying on his imagination this time.

But Season 7 won’t revisit the mystery of “H,” the storyline that dominated the first six seasons. Instead, the BBC has revealed a new approach: AC-12 is no more.

The anti-corruption unit has been restructured into the Inspectorate of Police Standards, shifting the series into new investigative territory. Their first major challenge? A high-ranking detective inspector accused of sexual misconduct — a storyline already sparking major conversation.

Cast Excitement and On-Set Reunion

The stars themselves are thrilled about the reunion.
Adrian Dunbar, in classic Ted Hastings fashion, celebrated the comeback by saying it’s a joy to have “the Three Amigos back filming together.”

Martin Compston added that returning to Line of Duty feels like “the job of a lifetime,” and he can’t wait to suit up in his signature waistcoat once again.

While no new cast members have been confirmed, expectations are high. Previous seasons have featured powerhouse talent like Keeley Hawes, Stephen Graham, Kelly Macdonald, Neil Morrissey, and Thandiwe Newton — meaning Season 7 has big shoes to fill.

What Fans Can Expect in 2026

The return of Line of Duty comes as British crime dramas continue dominating global streaming trends, and its 2026 release is expected to be one of the year’s biggest television events.

With a new division, a new threat, and the original squad back together, the upcoming season promises:

  • A darker, more socially charged storyline

  • High-stakes investigations

  • Twists worthy of classic Line of Duty cliffhangers

  • And, of course… plenty of Ted Hastings one-liners

Fans have waited years for answers — and now, they’re finally getting them.
