Every Yellowstone Franchise Season, Ranked

The TV world is full of popular shows, but Yellowstone became something much bigger. Creator Taylor Sheridan didn’t just make one series—he created a full universe. The story follows the Dutton family, their land, and the long struggle to protect it across generations in the American West.

At the center is Yellowstone, a five-season drama full of power struggles, family conflict, and intense action. Sheridan then expanded the story with spin-offs like 1883 and 1923, which explore the origins and evolution of the Dutton family. Together, these shows tell one long, powerful story.

Here is a ranking of every season in the Yellowstone franchise, from weakest to strongest.

Every Yellowstone Franchise Season, Ranked

8. Yellowstone Season 5 (2023–2024)

The final season of Yellowstone is split into two parts. John Dutton becomes the Governor of Montana, shifting the conflict from the ranch to politics. Beth continues her ruthless fight to protect the land, Jamie grows more dangerous, and Rip remains loyal as ever.

While the season brings closure, Kevin Costner’s absence in the second half is noticeable. Beth shines, but the story feels less focused toward the end, making it a slightly uneven finale.

7. Yellowstone Season 4 (2021)

Season 4 starts right after the violent attacks on the Dutton family. John recovers from being shot, Beth survives a bombing, and Kayce faces deadly threats. The ranch becomes a battlefield.

The season is intense and emotional, with strong performances and a memorable wedding for Rip and Beth. Fans enjoyed the survival theme, though it relied more on action than long-term story growth.

6. 1923 Season 2 (2024)

Set during a brutal winter, Season 2 of 1923 shows Jacob and Cara Dutton struggling against nature, enemies, and financial pressure. Spencer’s journey home from Africa remains central.

The acting is excellent, especially from Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, but the pacing is slower and the story feels less focused compared to Season 1.

5. Yellowstone Season 1 (2018)

The first season introduces John Dutton and his powerful ranch. He battles developers, Native American leaders, and politicians who want his land. Beth, Jamie, and Kayce all have personal struggles.

While the early response was mixed, the season grew stronger with each episode. It successfully set the tone for the entire franchise.

4. 1923 Season 1 (2022)

This season shows the Duttons during the early 1900s, facing Prohibition, economic hardship, and violent enemies. Jacob and Cara fight to keep their land, while Spencer’s storyline unfolds overseas.

Strong performances, beautiful visuals, and deep emotional storytelling made this season a fan favorite.

3. 1883 (2021)

1883 tells the origin story of the Dutton family. James and Margaret Dutton travel west in a dangerous wagon journey filled with death, disease, and hardship.

Narrated by Elsa Dutton, the show is emotional and raw. With powerful performances and stunning visuals, 1883 shows how much sacrifice went into building the Dutton legacy.

2. Yellowstone Season 2 (2019)

Season 2 raises the stakes with new enemies like the Beck brothers. Violence increases, and the family faces kidnappings, betrayal, and brutal decisions.

The season is gripping, emotional, and full of shocking moments, making it one of the strongest chapters in the franchise.

1. Yellowstone Season 3 (2020)

Season 3 is the best season in the Yellowstone universe. Corporate giant Market Equities threatens the ranch, pushing the Duttons into all-out war.

Beth is at her best, Kayce steps into leadership, and Jamie’s past causes deep family damage. The season ends with one of the most shocking cliffhangers in TV history, solidifying Yellowstone as a modern classic.
