Michael Bay’s Cancelled Lobo Movie Would Have Been Extremely Violent
Jason Momoa is finally playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie. However, many fans may not know that Lobo was once planned to have his own solo movie, directed by Michael Bay. This movie was later cancelled, but new details have now been revealed.
Screenwriter Jason Fuchs recently spoke on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and shared how intense the movie was going to be.
“More Violent Than Deadpool”
According to Jason Fuchs, the cancelled Lobo movie was planned as a hard R-rated film. He described it as extremely violent and wild.
He said:
“It was a hard-R, psychotic movie. Very violent. It made Deadpool look like a Disney family film.”
This extreme tone is believed to be one of the main reasons why the movie was never made.
What the Lobo Movie Would Have Been Like
Jason Fuchs explained that the movie was similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, but if it were directed by Quentin Tarantino. It would have mixed dark humor, violence, and strange characters.
One scene would have made fun of Batman v Superman. In that scene, a villain begs Lobo to spare his life by saying his mother’s name is Martha. Lobo replies that his mother is also named Martha — but kills him anyway.
DC Characters Planned for the Film
The movie would not have focused only on Lobo. It was also planned to include:
-
Green Lantern Jack T. Chance (not the famous Earth Green Lanterns)
-
The alien superhero team L.E.G.I.O.N.
Jason Fuchs said he enjoyed writing the story and that the relationship between Lobo and Jack T. Chance was a major part of the film. The movie could have even started a L.E.G.I.O.N. spin-off series.
Why the Movie Was Cancelled
A Lobo movie has been in development since 2009. Over the years:
-
Guy Ritchie was first attached but left
-
Brad Peyton replaced him and considered Dwayne Johnson for Lobo
-
Jason Fuchs was hired in 2016
-
Michael Bay was linked to the project in 2018
However, Michael Bay never officially signed on. Around that time, DC and Warner Bros. were going through many leadership changes after Justice League. Their plans for the DC movie universe kept changing, and eventually, the Lobo movie fell apart.
Lobo’s Future in the DCU
Now, Jason Momoa is officially bringing Lobo to the big screen in Supergirl. There are also rumors that the character could appear in a future Superman sequel or get his own spin-off movie or HBO special.
Jason Fuchs believes Lobo will get his movie one day, even if it’s not his version. He said:
“It’s one of the great characters. I’m sure we’ll see a Lobo movie someday.”
