Sigourney Weaver Talks About Galaxy Quest 2
Sigourney Weaver has spoken about the Galaxy Quest sequel that was never made. The original Galaxy Quest movie was released in 1999 and became a cult favorite. Many fans hoped for Galaxy Quest 2, but the sequel never happened.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Sigourney Weaver talked about her most memorable roles. She is best known for playing Ripley in the Alien movies, but she also loves her role as Gwen DeMarco in Galaxy Quest.
Weaver said she really wanted to play Gwen because the character felt closer to her personality than Ripley. She also shared how much she enjoyed working with the cast, including Alan Rickman and Tony Shaloub. She described the group as amazing and said the movie felt like a true team effort.
Why Galaxy Quest 2 Never Happened
Sigourney Weaver revealed that a script for Galaxy Quest 2 was actually written. However, the writer did not give it to the studio because he felt they did not fully support the first movie. Later, after Alan Rickman passed away, the cast lost motivation to continue the project.
Weaver said the movie was a “love letter to actors,” and losing Rickman made it very hard to imagine a sequel without him.
The Unreleased Director’s Cut
Weaver also talked about a director’s cut of Galaxy Quest that has never been released. She explained that some of Alan Rickman’s scenes were cut because the studio wanted the movie to be more suitable for children. This was done so it could compete with Stuart Little at the box office.
She believes the director’s cut includes more of Rickman’s strange and wonderful performance and hopes it will be released one day.
Why Gwen DeMarco Is Special
Although Ripley is Sigourney Weaver’s most famous role, Gwen DeMarco holds a special place in her heart. Weaver said she felt deeply connected to Gwen, a character who wanted to be taken seriously but was often judged only by her looks.
She explained that Gwen represents many women in Hollywood who are underestimated. Weaver said she felt compassion and sisterhood with Gwen and with Tawny Madison, the character Gwen plays inside the Galaxy Quest universe.
Final Thoughts
Galaxy Quest remains one of Sigourney Weaver’s favorite films. Even though a sequel never happened, the movie continues to be loved by fans around the world. As the famous line from the movie says, fans should “never give up, never surrender” hope for more Galaxy Quest content in the future.
