Why James Gunn Did Not Choose a Big Hollywood Star for Brainiac

James Gunn surprised many fans by casting Lars Eidinger as Brainiac in the upcoming DCU movie Man of Tomorrow. Many people expected a famous Hollywood A-list actor for the role, but Gunn chose a different path.

Lars Eidinger is a well-known actor in Europe, but many DC fans may not recognize him. He has appeared in projects like All the Light We Cannot See and George Clooney’s Netflix movie Jay Kelly. Still, James Gunn believes that being famous is not the most important thing when casting a role.

James Gunn Explains His Casting Choice

In a post on Threads, James Gunn explained that he prefers to cast the best actor for the role, not the most famous one. He shared that many actors who are now big stars were not well-known when he first cast them.

Gunn mentioned names like Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Milly Alcock, and Daniela Melchior, saying they were not considered movie stars when they auditioned. He said auditions often lead him to the right actor.

Rumors About Other Actors Were False

Some reports online claimed that famous actors like Matt Smith, Sam Rockwell, and Claes Bang were close to getting the Brainiac role. James Gunn quickly denied these rumors.

He clearly said that none of those actors even auditioned or screen tested for the role and called the reports “completely made up.”

What We Know About Man of Tomorrow

The announcement of Man of Tomorrow surprised many fans. The movie was not originally part of James Gunn’s announced DC movie list and was revealed shortly after the new Superman film.

The story of the movie is being kept secret, but it is confirmed that Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will team up with Superman, played by David Corenswet, to stop Brainiac. The movie is scheduled to be released in 2027.

Other DC characters may also appear, including Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl.

Superman Remains the Focus of the DCU

So far, James Gunn’s DC Universe seems very focused on Superman. The Man of Steel will appear in multiple DC movies before Batman even arrives. Whether this focus will change in the future is still unknown, but for now, Superman remains the heart of the DCU.
