Daisy Ridley Clears the Air on Her Star Wars Future After Lucasfilm Changes
Recent changes at Lucasfilm have once again stirred strong reactions from Star Wars fans. When it was officially confirmed that longtime studio president Kathleen Kennedy would be stepping away, speculation exploded about what this meant for the future of the franchise — especially projects still in development, including Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Rey Skywalker movie.
Now, Ridley herself has addressed those concerns, and her comments appear to confirm what many fans were hoping for.
Daisy Ridley Says the Rey Movie Is Still Safe
In an interview conducted late last year, Daisy Ridley was asked about the then-rumored leadership changes at Lucasfilm. Her response made it clear that the situation behind the scenes would not affect her return as Rey.
According to Ridley, even if leadership shifted, the plans for her film would continue as expected. She emphasized that the excitement from fans is encouraging and that part of the fun is keeping some mystery alive until the project is ready to be revealed.
While this reassures fans that the movie is still moving forward, it also suggests that production will not be rushed. When asked if fans might see updates soon, Ridley admitted she is unsure if there will be news in 2026, hinting that the wait could be longer than some expect.
A Divided Galaxy Far, Far Away
Lucasfilm became part of Disney in 2012, a move that reshaped the Star Wars universe. Daisy Ridley joined the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, which was both a massive box-office success and well received by critics.
However, the modern era of Star Wars also coincided with the rise of social media-driven fan backlash. Ridley became a frequent target of online harassment, much of it rooted in sexism, eventually leading her to step away from social media entirely.
The controversy grew after The Last Jedi, which took bold creative risks that sharply divided the fanbase. By the time The Rise of Skywalker arrived, the attempt to satisfy all sides resulted in mixed reactions and the weakest reviews of the sequel trilogy.
Because of this history, many fans were shocked when it was announced that Ridley would return as Rey in a new film focused on rebuilding the Jedi Order. Still, her recent comments suggest confidence and stability around the project.
What’s Coming Next for Star Wars
The next Star Wars movie to hit theaters will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, bringing the popular Disney+ characters to the big screen. It will be the first theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker.
Lucasfilm also has several other projects in development. Dave Filoni, now serving as co-president alongside Lynwen Brennan, is working on a film that will connect the stories of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett.
At the same time, fans remain cautious. Lucasfilm has a history of announcing projects that later face delays or are quietly canceled. Past examples include a planned trilogy from Rian Johnson and a previously announced film exploring the origins of the Jedi.
Despite this, progress appears to be happening. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter has reportedly entered active production, while filmmakers such as Simon Kinberg and Taika Waititi are still linked to future projects.
