Anthony Mackie’s Desert Warrior Finally Moves Toward Release

Anthony Mackie’s long-delayed action epic Desert Warrior is finally moving forward. After spending years stuck in post-production, the big-budget historical film may soon reach cinemas in the U.S. and U.K.

The movie was originally filmed in 2021 with a reported budget of $150 million. It was designed to be Saudi Arabia’s first major attempt at blockbuster filmmaking. Although it was once planned for a 2025 release, ongoing delays and behind-the-scenes issues prevented it from hitting theaters on time.

Now, there is fresh hope for fans of action movies.

Desert Warrior Finds a Distributor

According to an official press release, Vertical has acquired the distribution rights for Desert Warrior in the United States and United Kingdom. While an exact release date has not been confirmed, the studio is aiming for a spring theatrical release.

The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt, known for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler. Wyatt also co-wrote the screenplay. Despite rumors of production troubles, including reports that Wyatt was briefly removed before returning, the director has remained supportive of the project.

The movie first premiered at the Zurich Film Festival last year, giving audiences an early look at the epic.

What Is Desert Warrior About?

Desert Warrior is set in seventh-century Arabia and tells the story of Princess Hind, played by Aiysha Hart. Hind refuses to accept her fate of becoming a concubine to the ruthless Emperor Kisra, played by Sir Ben Kingsley.

After escaping into the desert with her father, she is hunted by a powerful army. During her journey, she forms an alliance with a legendary bandit, played by Anthony Mackie. Together, they must survive betrayal, danger, and political conflict.

The story builds toward the historic Battle of Ze Qar, where Hind unites rival tribes in a final stand that could change history.

The film also stars Ghassan Massoud and Sharlto Copley, adding more star power to the cast.

Rupert Wyatt Teases an Epic Experience

Director Rupert Wyatt has described Desert Warrior as a rare film that combines emotional storytelling with large-scale action. According to Wyatt, the movie was shot in breathtaking desert locations using practical effects and massive on-location production.

He praised the cast and crew for their dedication, calling it one of the last big “in-camera” action epics made on real locations rather than relying heavily on CGI.

With its historical setting, large battle scenes, and political drama, Desert Warrior aims to deliver a cinematic experience designed for the big screen.

Anthony Mackie’s Busy Upcoming Projects

Anthony Mackie continues to stay busy in Hollywood. After starring in Captain America: Brave New World, he is set to return as Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming team-up film Avengers: Doomsday, one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. He is also expected to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mackie is returning for Season 3 of the hit series Twisted Metal following its strong performance in 2025.

He has also joined the crime thriller Raven alongside Pablo Schreiber. Another major project in post-production is Signal Hill, a drama set in 1981 that focuses on police brutality. In that film, Mackie plays legendary lawyer Johnnie Cochran, starring alongside Jamie Foxx and Elizabeth Banks.

In addition, he is developing a film adaptation of David Mamet’s Speed the Plow and working on a heist series titled 12 12 12.

With such a packed schedule, Desert Warrior adds another major title to Mackie’s growing list of action and drama projects.

Why Desert Warrior Matters

Desert Warrior represents a major step for Saudi Arabia’s film industry, as it was designed to showcase the region’s ability to produce large-scale international blockbusters. With its historical setting, grand battle sequences, and star-studded cast, the film could attract global audiences once it officially releases.

After years of uncertainty, the movie finally appears to be back on track. If it delivers on its epic promise, Desert Warrior could become one of the standout action films of the year.
