David Boreanaz Cast as Jim Rockford in NBC Reboot

Television star David Boreanaz is stepping into one of TV’s most iconic detective roles. NBC has officially cast him as Jim Rockford in its upcoming pilot for a reboot of The Rockford Files.

The character was originally played by legendary actor James Garner, who starred in the series from 1974 to 1980 and later returned for several TV movies. Now, decades later, the classic crime drama is getting a modern update.

A New Chapter for The Rockford Files

NBC has given the reboot a pilot order, meaning the first episode will be produced before the network decides whether to order a full season. If approved, the show could premiere during the 2026–2027 TV season.

The new version will stay true to the original concept. Jim Rockford is a private investigator in Los Angeles who is trying to rebuild his life after being released from prison for a crime he did not commit. The mix of mystery, drama, and light humor made the original series a fan favorite.

Why David Boreanaz Is a Strong Choice

David Boreanaz has a strong history of leading successful television series. He became famous playing a supernatural investigator in Angel, a spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Later, he starred in the long-running crime drama Bones, where he played FBI agent Seeley Booth. Most recently, he led the action series SEAL Team.

Because of his experience in detective and investigative roles, many fans believe he is a perfect fit for Jim Rockford. His track record suggests he could bring stability and popularity to the reboot.

Previous Reboot Attempts

This is not the first time Hollywood has tried to revive The Rockford Files. In 2009, NBC ordered a pilot starring Dermot Mulroney, but the network decided not to move forward with the series.

In 2012, Universal Pictures planned a movie remake starring Vince Vaughn. However, the project was later canceled following James Garner’s passing in 2014.

Now, NBC is trying once again, this time with writer Mike Daniels leading the creative team. With Boreanaz attached, the reboot may finally have the momentum it needs.

Can the Reboot Succeed?

Television audiences have recently shown strong interest in updated versions of classic shows. CBS successfully revived Matlock, proving that viewers still enjoy familiar characters with modern storytelling.

Combining the trusted Rockford Files brand with David Boreanaz’s loyal fan base could be a winning formula. However, there is one possible complication. Hulu is also developing a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and fans are curious whether Boreanaz might return as Angel. Scheduling conflicts could become a factor if both projects move forward.
