DCU’s Clayface Moves to October 2026 for a Bigger Halloween Release
Warner Bros. has officially delayed the release of Clayface, the upcoming DC Universe film centered on the iconic Batman villain. The movie will now arrive in theaters on October 23, 2026, one month later than its original September date.
According to industry reports, the studio believes the new timing will give Clayface a stronger box office run by positioning it as a major Halloween-season horror film. The new date was previously reserved for Remain, a collaboration between M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, which has now been pushed to February 2027.
Why Warner Bros. Changed the Release Date
Originally, Clayface was scheduled for September 11, 2026, a date that has historically worked well for Warner Bros. horror hits like It, It: Chapter Two, and The Conjuring franchise. However, the studio now sees more potential in a late-October release, when audiences actively seek horror movies.
With Halloween falling on a Saturday in 2026, Warner Bros. expects Clayface to dominate the spooky season and enjoy at least two weeks as the top horror film in theaters.
Meanwhile, Practical Magic 2, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, has taken over Clayface’s original September release date.
What Clayface Is About
Clayface will focus on Matt Hagen, the second version of the character in DC Comics. The film blends his story with elements from the original Clayface, Basil Karlo, portraying him as a struggling actor whose body is transformed into a terrifying, clay-like creature.
The movie is being directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and written by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) alongside Hossein Amini (Snow White and the Huntsman). The story is based on a pitch by Flanagan, known for his strong horror storytelling.
DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing the film, confirming that Clayface is fully connected to the new DCU timeline. A version of the character was previously seen in the animated series Creature Commandos.
Competition at the Box Office
On October 23, 2026, Clayface will face some competition, including:
-
Wildwood, a stop-motion animated film from Laika
-
Wife & Dog, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike
Despite this, the following weekend has no major releases planned, as studios usually avoid opening big films right before Halloween. This gives Clayface a strong advantage.
What This Means for the DCU Schedule
The delay also creates space in the DCU release calendar. With Clayface now landing in late October, another DC project, possibly Lanterns, could take a late July or August slot and run smoothly into September without overlapping releases.
