Mike Flanagan to Direct New Adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist
Horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan is returning to Stephen King adaptations, this time directing a new version of The Mist for Warner Bros. Pictures. While fans eagerly await Flanagan’s upcoming Dark Tower series for Amazon MGM Studios, The Mist will be his next King project instead.
The Mist, originally published in King’s 1980 novella collection Skeleton Crew, tells the story of a small Maine town engulfed by a mysterious fog filled with deadly creatures. A group of residents takes refuge in a local grocery store, but tensions rise, secrets are exposed, and survival becomes a desperate struggle. The story was previously adapted into a 2007 movie by Frank Darabont, featuring one of the most shocking endings in cinema, and a short-lived TV series in 2017.
Flanagan, known for hits like Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and The Life of Chuck, will bring his signature style to this remake. However, it remains to be seen what new elements he can add to the story that past adaptations haven’t explored. His decision to tackle The Mist follows his work on the controversial Carrie TV miniseries, marking another revisit to well-known King material.
Meanwhile, Flanagan’s Dark Tower project for Amazon MGM Studios remains in development. After the criticized 2017 adaptation, fans are eager to see a faithful version of King’s magnum opus. Flanagan recently revealed that scripts for the series and movies are ready, but legal and licensing issues are delaying production. The Mist could serve as a way for Flanagan to stay busy while these matters are resolved.
With Warner Bros. having adapted other King novels like Salem’s Lot and Hearts in Atlantis, characters from these stories could eventually appear in The Dark Tower. Flanagan’s new Mist adaptation may help pave the way for this larger cinematic universe.
Fans can expect a suspenseful and intense horror experience when Flanagan’s version of The Mist finally hits screens.
