Dune Part 3: Anya Taylor-Joy Almost Played a Different Character Before Becoming Alia Atreides

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to have a much bigger role in Dune: Part 3, but new details reveal that she was originally considered for a completely different character in Denis Villeneuve’s popular sci-fi franchise.

The actress recently spoke about her journey into the Dune universe while promoting her upcoming Apple TV+ series Lucky. During the interview, she shared how determined she was to join one of Hollywood’s most successful film series.

Anya Taylor-Joy Missed Out on Earlier Dune Roles

According to Taylor-Joy, she met director Denis Villeneuve at an event in 2022. During their conversation, Villeneuve revealed that he had written a role for her in Dune: Part Two.

However, the actress was already committed to filming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and the production schedules overlapped. Because of this conflict, she was unable to accept the opportunity.

Reports suggest that the role offered to her may have been either Lady Margot or Princess Irulan. Those characters were eventually portrayed by Léa Seydoux and Florence Pugh in the final film.

Determined to Join the Dune Universe

Taylor-Joy admitted she was disappointed about missing the chance to appear in Dune: Part Two. She loved the world Villeneuve had created and hoped there would still be a way for her to become part of the story.

After completing work on Furiosa, she received a call from Villeneuve with another opportunity. The director offered her the role of Alia Atreides, one of the most important characters in Frank Herbert’s famous novels.

Although Alia only appeared briefly in Dune: Part Two through Paul's visions, Taylor-Joy described the experience as one of the most memorable moments of her career.

Alia Atreides Will Play a Major Role in Dune Part 3

Fans of the Dune books already know that Alia Atreides becomes a key figure in the story's future. Her importance grows significantly as the saga continues, making her one of the franchise’s most fascinating characters.

Because of this, Anya Taylor-Joy is expected to have a much larger presence in Dune: Part 3. The upcoming sequel will continue the story after the events of Dune: Part Two and explore the next chapter in the Atreides family's journey.

With Denis Villeneuve returning to direct and Anya Taylor-Joy stepping into a bigger role, Dune: Part 3 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
