Robert Downey Jr. Says Doctor Doom Must Surpass Thanos in Avengers Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr. has finally spoken about his highly anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time he is not coming back as Iron Man. Instead, the actor will take on the role of the legendary Marvel villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

During a recent question-and-answer session celebrating the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, Downey shared his thoughts on playing the MCU's next major villain. The event also featured directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are returning to direct the upcoming Avengers films.

Doctor Doom Faces the Legacy of Thanos

Downey acknowledged that stepping into the role of Doctor Doom comes with significant expectations because fans still consider Thanos one of the greatest villains in superhero movie history. Josh Brolin's performance as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame helped define an entire era of Marvel storytelling.

According to Downey, a superhero movie can only succeed if its villain is strong enough to challenge the heroes. He noted that Avengers: Doomsday shares similarities with Infinity War because both stories depend heavily on the power and impact of their central villain.

The actor explained that audiences immediately recognized the threat posed by Thanos, and Doctor Doom will need to create a similar level of excitement and fear when he arrives on screen.

Why Marvel Chose Doctor Doom

Marvel's plans reportedly changed after actor Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Kang the Conqueror, exited the franchise. As a result, the studio shifted its focus toward Doctor Doom, one of Marvel Comics' most iconic villains.

Bringing back Robert Downey Jr. generated enormous attention among fans. Fresh off his Academy Award-winning performance in Oppenheimer, the actor's return instantly became one of Marvel's biggest announcements in recent years.

A Star-Studded Cast for Avengers Doomsday

The excitement surrounding Avengers: Doomsday has also encouraged the return of several familiar faces from Marvel's past. Reports have linked actors from the original Fox X-Men films to the project, including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, and Rebecca Romijn.

In addition, Channing Tatum's Gambit, who made his Marvel debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also expected to be part of the growing cast.

Marvel's Most Ambitious Event Yet

With Robert Downey Jr. leading the story as Doctor Doom, Marvel Studios is preparing one of the most ambitious crossover events in MCU history. The film aims to deliver high stakes, major surprises, and a villain powerful enough to follow in Thanos' footsteps.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18 and is already being described as one of the most dramatic and important chapters in the Marvel saga.
