Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Could Cost Netflix $280 Million

Netflix is reportedly spending around $280 million on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, making it one of the most expensive movies in the streamer’s history.

The new Narnia movie is directed by Greta Gerwig, who is taking on a major adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ fantasy world. The film’s cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey, recently discussed the project on a podcast and mentioned a budget of about $280 million.

If accurate, the budget would place Narnia among Netflix’s biggest film investments. The Electric State reportedly cost around $320 million after additional filming, while The Irishman, Red Notice, and The Gray Man were also made with budgets of roughly $200 million or more.

Netflix Plans a Big Theatrical Release

The huge budget may explain why Netflix is giving the new Narnia movie a longer theatrical run than usual.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 12, 2027. The movie will reportedly have an exclusive 49-day theatrical window before becoming available on Netflix.

This is an important move for Netflix, as the company has traditionally focused heavily on streaming rather than long theatrical runs.

A Practical Approach to Fantasy Filmmaking

McGarvey has described Narnia as one of the biggest large-scale productions made with a strong hands-on filmmaking approach.

The movie will naturally feature plenty of visual effects, but the production reportedly aims to use practical filmmaking wherever possible instead of relying entirely on CGI. This could give the fantasy world a more realistic and detailed look.

Narnia Cast and New Filming

The film features a major cast, including Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Ciarán Hinds, and Carey Mulligan.

Additional filming is also taking place at Shepperton Studios with members of the main cast. There have been online reports claiming that the extra shooting was ordered following an unsatisfying test screening, but those reports have not been officially confirmed.

With a reported $280 million budget, a major cast, Greta Gerwig behind the camera, and an unusual theatrical release plan, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s biggest fantasy projects yet.
