Manoj Bajpayee to Portray Mahatma Gandhi in Sudhir Mishra’s New Film
Manoj Bajpayee is set to play Mahatma Gandhi in a new theatrical film directed by Sudhir Mishra and produced by Anubhav Sinha. The story will focus on a lesser-known 21-day period from Gandhi’s life around India’s Independence.
National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee is all set to portray Mahatma Gandhi on screen for the first time. The upcoming film will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and backed by producer Anubhav Sinha.
The film will explore a little-known chapter from Gandhi’s life during the time of India’s Independence. Instead of covering his entire journey, the story will focus on a specific 21-day period when Gandhi made an unexpected decision to leave Delhi.
Manoj Bajpayee as Mahatma Gandhi
The casting of Manoj Bajpayee as Gandhi is one of the biggest highlights of the project. Known for powerful performances in films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, The Family Man and Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, Bajpayee will take on one of the most important historical figures in India.
This will be his first role as Mahatma Gandhi, adding another challenging character to his long and respected career.
Actor Saurabh Shukla will also appear in the film in an important role. More details about his character and the rest of the cast have not yet been revealed.
A Different Story About Gandhi
Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the film will look at Gandhi from a more personal angle. The story takes place during the period when India was moving towards freedom and Delhi was becoming the centre of political power.
According to Mishra, Gandhi chose to move away from Delhi during this important moment. The film will explore why he made that decision and what was happening in his personal and political life at the time.
Rather than presenting a traditional biography, the movie aims to show a lesser-known side of Gandhi and the thoughts behind one of his unusual choices.
Sudhir Mishra Returns to Theatrical Cinema
The project also marks Sudhir Mishra’s return to theatrical filmmaking after a long gap. The filmmaker is known for critically acclaimed movies such as Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin.
Mishra has also received three National Film Awards during his career for Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin, Dharavi and Main Zinda Hoon.
His collaboration with Anubhav Sinha brings together two filmmakers known for socially relevant and strong storytelling.
Anubhav Sinha Produces the Film
The upcoming Gandhi film is being produced by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat under Benaras Mediaworks. NH Studioz will present the movie.
Sinha has previously backed and directed films such as Mulk, Article 15 and Thappad. His involvement suggests that the new project will focus strongly on its historical and social themes.
The film will not attempt to tell Gandhi’s complete life story. Instead, it will use one important period to explore the man behind the historical figure.
Gandhi Film Release Details
The movie is currently being developed as a theatrical release. The makers have not yet announced the official release date, complete cast or other production details.
With Manoj Bajpayee playing Mahatma Gandhi and Sudhir Mishra directing, the film is expected to offer a fresh and intimate look at one of the most significant periods in Indian history.
