Mortal Kombat 3 Faces an Uncertain Future After Sequel Struggles

The future of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise is now uncertain. A third film was previously being developed, but disappointing box office results for Mortal Kombat 2 have made its return far from guaranteed.

Director Simon McQuoid recently gave a cautious update about the possibility of Mortal Kombat 3. His comments suggest that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have not made a final decision about continuing the series.

Mortal Kombat 3 Is Not Confirmed

The idea of a third Mortal Kombat movie was first revealed at New York Comic Con in 2025. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater had reportedly started working on the script, giving fans hope that the story would continue after the second movie.

However, plans appear to have changed following the release of Mortal Kombat 2. When McQuoid was asked about the third movie, he explained that the second film was still going through different stages and that there was no final decision yet.

This means Mortal Kombat 3 is currently in an uncertain position, rather than officially confirmed for production.

Mortal Kombat 2 Failed to Become a Big Hit

The biggest problem for the franchise is the box office performance of Mortal Kombat 2. While the sequel received better reviews than the first movie, it did not attract enough audiences to become a major financial success.

The movie currently has a 64 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with 55 percent for the 2021 original. Despite the improvement in critical reception, the sequel earned around $129 million worldwide against a reported production budget of approximately $80 million.

Once marketing and other costs are included, those numbers make it difficult to describe the film as a strong theatrical success.

The Director May Move On

McQuoid's own comments have also raised questions about his future with the franchise. The director has indicated that he is interested in exploring stories outside the Mortal Kombat universe.

He is already developing other projects, including one that is reportedly set in the real world and focuses heavily on a single character and psychological themes.

That could make the situation even more complicated if Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema eventually decide to move forward with another Mortal Kombat movie.
