The Princess Diaries 3 is moving ahead, but one familiar face will be missing. Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first two films, will not return for the upcoming sequel.

Anne Hathaway, who is returning as Mia Thermopolis, has spoken openly about Andrews' decision. While she would love to see her longtime co-star return, Hathaway made it clear that Andrews' choice should be respected.

Speaking at the D23 Expo, where she was also honored as a Disney Legend, Hathaway shared her affection for Andrews and the impact she has had on audiences.

The team reportedly explored ways to bring Andrews back as Queen Clarisse. However, those plans did not work out. Hathaway suggested that if Andrews ever changed her mind, the door would remain open.

For now, though, the decision is entirely Andrews' own.

Despite Andrews' absence, The Princess Diaries 3 is still in development.

Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis and is also attached as a producer. Filmmaker Adele Lim is directing the movie, while the screenplay has gone through major changes during development.

Hathaway revealed that the story had to be reworked, with the team even starting again from scratch. Although that process has taken time, she believes the changes have helped the movie move in the right direction.
