Varanasi Could Become the Biggest IMAX Movie Ever

Indian cinema is getting ready for another huge epic. Varanasi, the upcoming film from RRR director S. S. Rajamouli, is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious movies in Indian cinema.

The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran and is expected to bring a massive adventure to the big screen.

Varanasi Is Being Shot Entirely in IMAX

One of the biggest highlights of Varanasi is its format. The entire movie is being filmed using IMAX cameras, making it only the second film to be shot completely in the format after Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

It will also make history as the first non-English language movie filmed entirely in IMAX.

The scale does not stop there. Varanasi is expected to run for more than three hours. If that runtime is confirmed, it will be longer than The Odyssey, which has a reported runtime of around 2 hours and 50 minutes.

A Huge Global Adventure

Rajamouli is known for creating films on a massive scale, and Varanasi appears to be following that tradition.

Around 80 percent of the movie has reportedly already been filmed, including several major action scenes. The production has also traveled far beyond India, with filming taking place in Kenya and Antarctica.

Shooting in Antarctica adds another unusual element to the project, as very few major films have used the remote location for production.

A Massive Budget

Varanasi is also expected to have a budget of more than $150 million, putting it among the most expensive Indian productions ever made.

The investment reflects the film's international ambitions. Rather than being designed only for the Indian market, Varanasi is being presented as a large-scale global adventure with an international cast and locations.

When Will Varanasi Be Released?

Varanasi is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 7, 2027.

With its huge budget, international locations, star-studded cast and full IMAX production, the movie is already attracting attention around the world.

If Rajamouli delivers the kind of spectacle audiences have come to expect from his previous films, Varanasi could become one of the biggest Indian movie events of 2027.
