Varanasi Set to Make History as India’s Biggest IMAX Film

Indian cinema is getting ready for another massive cinematic event. SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is expected to become one of the biggest Indian films ever made, and its IMAX format is making the project even more special.

The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran and is being developed as a large-scale global adventure.

Varanasi Is Shot Entirely in IMAX

One of the biggest highlights of Varanasi is that the movie has been filmed completely using IMAX cameras. If the current reports hold, it will become the second film to be shot entirely in this format after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

It will also have another major distinction: Varanasi is expected to be the first non-English-language movie filmed entirely in IMAX.

The film is reportedly planned to run for more than three hours. That could make it longer than The Odyssey, which has a reported runtime of around 2 hours and 50 minutes.

SS Rajamouli Aims for a Global Adventure

Known for films such as RRR and Baahubali, SS Rajamouli is once again working on a project designed on a huge scale.

Around 80% of Varanasi has reportedly been completed, including several major action sequences. The production has also travelled to different parts of the world to capture its story.

Filming has taken place in India, Kenya and Antarctica, giving the movie a truly international setting. Shooting in Antarctica also makes the project stand out, as only a limited number of films have been produced there.

A Massive Budget

Varanasi is reportedly being made with a budget of more than $150 million, placing it among the most expensive Indian productions.

With its large-scale action, international locations and IMAX presentation, the film is clearly being planned as a global theatrical experience.

The combination of Rajamouli’s filmmaking style, Mahesh Babu’s star power and an international cast has already created strong interest among movie fans.

Varanasi Release Date

Varanasi is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on April 7, 2027.

If the film maintains its planned scale and runtime, it could become one of the most ambitious Indian movies ever released in IMAX. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see whether Rajamouli can once again deliver a worldwide blockbuster.

Final Thoughts

From its all-IMAX production to its international locations and huge budget, Varanasi is shaping up to be a major event for Indian cinema. With SS Rajamouli behind the camera and Mahesh Babu leading the cast, expectations are already high for this upcoming epic adventure.
