After Toxic’s Box Office Setback, All Eyes Are on Yash as Ravana in Ramayana

Yash fans have already started looking ahead.

After the box office disappointment surrounding Toxic, the spotlight is now firmly shifting toward one of the biggest and most ambitious projects of his career, Ramayana. This time, the Rocking Star is not stepping into the shoes of another action hero. He is taking on one of Indian mythology’s most complex and iconic characters, Ravana.

And that alone has made Ramayana one of the most closely watched films for Yash fans.

Toxic Has Changed the Conversation Around Yash

Toxic arrived with enormous expectations. Coming after the massive success of KGF Chapter 2, Yash had become one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema, and audiences were expecting his next film to create another major impact.

The film opened strongly, but its box office performance did not maintain the momentum many expected. Current trade listings put its India lifetime collection at around ₹124.62 crore, while its final verdict remains listed as unavailable.

Yash's Ravana is not being presented as a simple villain.

Director Nitesh Tiwari has previously indicated that the character will be explored as a layered figure rather than a stereotypical antagonist. The film is expected to look at Ravana's intelligence, devotion, leadership and ultimately the ego and decisions that lead to his downfall.

That gives Yash something very different from the larger-than-life action roles audiences have become accustomed to seeing him play.

Ravana demands presence.

He needs authority, intensity, arrogance, intelligence and emotional depth at the same time.

Those are qualities that Yash has already demonstrated in his previous performances, which is one reason the casting has generated so much curiosity.

Yash Himself Knows the Pressure Is Huge

The actor has openly acknowledged that playing Ravana comes with extra pressure.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Yash explained that Ramayana was a story he had known since childhood and that audiences already have their own image of Ravana. That familiarity made it challenging to decide what he could bring to the character as an actor.

This is perhaps the biggest challenge facing the film.

Ravana is not an unknown character.

Millions of viewers already have a mental image of him, especially after iconic portrayals from television and cinema. Yash therefore cannot simply play a conventional villain and expect the character to work.

He has to create his own Ravana.

Ranbir Kapoor and Yash Could Create the Film’s Biggest Face Off

Ramayana also gives Yash an opportunity to share the screen with Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Rama.

Ranbir represents Rama, while Yash takes on Ravana. The eventual confrontation between the two characters could become one of the most anticipated sequences in the film.

In other words, the very performance that turned Yash into a pan-Indian superstar may have helped him land one of the most challenging roles of his career.

Yash is not simply an actor in Ramayana.

The project is being mounted as a massive two-part epic, with Nitesh Tiwari directing and Namit Malhotra producing. Yash is also involved as a co-producer.

The official project presentation lists Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The film is being developed for IMAX, with Part 1 scheduled for Diwali 2026 and Part 2 for Diwali 2027.

That scale means Ramayana has the potential to reach audiences far beyond Yash's traditional fan base.

The Real Question Is Whether Yash Can Turn Doubt Into Hype

The biggest advantage Yash has right now is curiosity.

After Toxic, audiences are watching his next move more closely.

And Ramayana is almost the perfect project for that situation.

Instead of returning with another familiar action character, Yash is attempting something dramatically different. He is playing a character whose story has been told for centuries and whose portrayal will inevitably be compared with some of the most memorable versions audiences have seen.
