Netflix is taking its collaboration with Sega in a surprising new direction. Following its recent announcement of a Diablo animated series, the streaming platform has revealed plans for Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven movies, while also adding a new animated Sonic series aimed at children.

The projects bring together recognizable Sega properties with producers and writers already connected to major entertainment franchises. While the two movies are very different in tone, both point toward a broader partnership between Netflix and Sega.

Netflix Announces Crazy Taxi Movie

One of the biggest surprises is the upcoming Crazy Taxi movie, based on Sega's long-running video game franchise.

The original Crazy Taxi debuted in arcades in 1999 and became known for its frantic driving gameplay. Players take on the role of reckless cab drivers, racing through busy city streets while attempting to reach destinations quickly and earn tips.

For the movie adaptation, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are writing the screenplay. The duo previously worked on the Naked Gun reboot.

The cinematic version will also have a notable producing team. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, who are associated with the Sonic franchise, will produce alongside Toru Nakahara.

The timing is particularly interesting for fans of the game, as the next installment, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled to arrive next year. That gives the franchise another major project on the horizon beyond the movie.

The Netflix movie is being developed ahead of a new video game from RGG Studio, the developer behind the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series.

The story is set in early 20th-century Japan and follows a mysterious stranger whose life takes a dramatic turn. Beginning in extreme poverty, he eventually rises to become a feared member of the yakuza before ultimately becoming an entertainment mogul.

The live-action adaptation will be produced by Toru Nakahara, who is also involved with the other Sega projects announced as part of the collaboration.

That premise gives Stranger Than Heaven a very different identity from Crazy Taxi, with its story focused on ambition, crime and a major transformation in the protagonist's life.

A New Sonic Animated Series Is Also Coming

Netflix and Sega are not stopping with the two movies.

Their expanding collaboration will also include a new animated Sonic series for children.

The partnership between the companies already includes Sonic Prime, the animated series that ran for three seasons. The new project will continue the collaboration while taking Sonic in another direction aimed specifically at younger audiences.

For fans of Sega properties, the combination of Crazy Taxi, Stranger Than Heaven and another Sonic animated series represents a significant expansion of the company's entertainment presence on Netflix.

Sega Producer Teases Three Very Different Projects

Toru Nakahara, Sega's lead producer, offered a glimpse at what audiences can expect from the projects.

He described the upcoming Sonic series as "cute yet gritty," while Crazy Taxi is being positioned as "crazy and hilarious." Meanwhile, Stranger Than Heaven is described as a "hard-hitting action drama."

Nakahara also made it clear that the creative collaboration is only getting started, saying the teams have more ideas in store.

The comments highlight just how different these projects are. Instead of giving all three properties the same cinematic treatment, Netflix and Sega appear to be leaning into the individual identity of each franchise.
