Avengers Endgame Just Took Back the Box Office Crown From Avatar

The battle for the biggest movie in box office history has taken another unexpected turn. Avengers: Endgame has officially reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film ever, once again moving ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar after its latest theatrical re-release.

The Marvel blockbuster now stands at approximately $2.9255 billion worldwide, narrowly surpassing Avatar, which has reached around $2.9237 billion globally. The difference may be small, but the significance of the comeback is enormous.

Avengers Endgame Is No. 1 Again

When Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters in 2019, it immediately became a box-office phenomenon. The film eventually crossed the $2.7 billion mark and overtook Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie in history.

However, the reign did not last forever.

In 2021, Avatar returned to theaters and generated enough additional revenue to move back into first place. Since then, the two films have remained closely connected in the race for the worldwide box-office crown.

Now, in 2026, Marvel has taken the lead once again.

The Endgame Encore Re-Release Changed Everything

The latest comeback was made possible by the theatrical return of Avengers: Endgame: Encore.

The re-release gave audiences another opportunity to experience the Marvel epic on the big screen while also helping push its lifetime worldwide earnings higher.

According to The Walt Disney Company, Endgame Encore helped bring the movie's worldwide total to approximately $2.9255 billion, putting it just ahead of Avatar's $2.9237 billion.

The re-release itself generated more than $126 million worldwide, providing the final boost Endgame needed to reclaim the record.

Avatar and Endgame Keep Trading the Crown

What makes this box-office battle particularly fascinating is how often these two movies have exchanged the No. 1 position.

Avatar originally became the highest-grossing movie ever after its 2009 release and held the record for years. Then Avengers: Endgame arrived in 2019 and finally knocked Cameron's blockbuster from the top spot.

Avatar fought back in 2021 following another theatrical release.

Now, Endgame has returned to No. 1 once again.

The latest figures put the two movies only a few million dollars apart, making this one of the closest battles for the worldwide box-office crown in modern Hollywood history.

Why Avengers Endgame Still Has Such Strong Box Office Power

There is a reason Avengers: Endgame continues to attract audiences years after its original release.

The 2019 film was the culmination of more than a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling. It brought together major characters and storylines that had been developed across numerous Marvel movies, turning its theatrical release into a major cinematic event.

Even years later, that sense of occasion remains powerful enough to bring audiences back to theaters.

The success of Endgame Encore demonstrates that the movie's box-office appeal has not disappeared. Instead, its return has given Marvel another opportunity to capitalize on one of the biggest cinematic events in its history.

The Timing Could Not Be Better for Marvel

The timing of the re-release is also important.

Marvel is preparing audiences for the next major chapter of the Avengers story, with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon. The theatrical return of Endgame gives longtime fans another chance to revisit the previous era of the franchise while building anticipation for what comes next.

Disney has also highlighted the wider strength of Marvel Studios at the global box office. The studio's 38 theatrical releases have collectively generated more than $35 billion worldwide, underlining the extraordinary commercial reach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Can Avatar Take the Record Back Again?

That may be the biggest question following Endgame's latest victory.

The gap between the two movies is extremely small. Endgame currently leads Avatar by only around $1.8 million, meaning another significant theatrical release for Cameron's film could potentially change the rankings again.

For now, however, Marvel gets to celebrate.

Avengers: Endgame is once again the highest-grossing movie in worldwide box-office history.

And considering how closely Avatar remains behind it, this may not be the final chapter in their extraordinary box-office rivalry.

For movie fans, the real winner may be the fact that the race is still alive.
