Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to Face Jake Paul in High-Profile Exhibition Bout on Netflix
YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul is set to face his toughest challenge yet — a boxing match against Gervonta “Tank” Davis, the WBA lightweight champion.
On Wednesday, Netflix announced that the two will meet in an exhibition fight at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on November 14.
This fight is seen as a huge step up for Paul, who has mostly faced older fighters or those with little boxing experience, like Julio César Chávez Jr., Mike Tyson, and former MMA fighters.
Davis, on the other hand, has a very impressive record: 30 wins, no losses, and one draw, with 28 of those wins by knockout. He recently drew against Lamont Roach Jr. in March, but before that, he knocked out both Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin. After Paul’s fight with Mike Tyson, Davis even called him a “bozo,” challenging him directly.
However, there’s a big weight difference between Paul and Davis. Because this fight is just an exhibition, many fans are questioning how serious or fair the matchup really is.
For Davis, the fight will bring a huge paycheck, but beating Jake Paul won’t add much to his boxing reputation. Some critics even think Davis is using this fight to avoid tougher challenges, like fighting WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson or having a rematch with Lamont Roach.
Roach himself hinted on social media that Davis doesn’t want the rematch.
On the other side, even if Paul wins, many people won’t give him much credit because he is much bigger in size, and the fight won’t count on his official record anyway.
Boxing reporter Mike Coppinger summed it up by saying this event is “less about fighting and more about entertainment.” From that angle, it will likely be a big success with fans and viewers, even if it doesn’t mean much for either fighter’s career.
