Trump Orders Release of Ex-Congressman George Santos After Commuting His Sentence
Former US President Donald Trump has shortened the prison sentence of George Santos, a former Republican congressman who was serving seven years in jail for fraud and identity theft.
Trump announced the decision on social media, saying Santos had been “treated unfairly” and added:
“I just signed a commutation releasing George Santos from prison immediately. Good luck George, have a great life!”
Santos was one of only six people in US history to be expelled from Congress after an ethics report in 2023.
He had admitted to stealing the identities of 11 people, including some of his own family members. Santos was serving his sentence at a low-security prison in New Jersey and was released on Friday night.
His lawyer thanked Trump, saying: “God bless President Donald J. Trump.”
When Santos was sentenced in April, the judge told him:
“You got elected with your words, most of which were lies.”
Santos cried in court and said he was sorry for what he had done:
“I can’t change the past, but I can control the road ahead.”
Prosecutors said Santos lied about his background and used campaign money for personal luxuries.
Trump defended his decision by attacking Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal, accusing him of lying about his military service. Trump said what Blumenthal did was “far worse” than Santos’s actions and praised Santos for “always voting Republican.”
Blumenthal has admitted that he misspoke about his military record years ago but said voters had already accepted his explanation.
Santos’s problems began in 2022 when The New York Times revealed that he had lied about his education and work experience. More lies followed, including stealing money from a dying dog’s fundraiser and lying about his mother surviving the 9/11 attacks.
He was charged with 23 federal crimes and expelled from Congress in 2023. An ethics report also accused him of spending campaign funds on Botox and OnlyFans subscriptions.
Earlier this week, Santos published an open letter to Trump asking for mercy and a chance to rebuild his life. He said he had been kept in solitary confinement after a death threat and wanted “fairness, not sympathy.”
Trump has already granted clemency to two other former Republican officials since returning to office — Michael Grimm (for tax crimes) and John Rowland (for corruption and fraud).
A commutation reduces or ends a prison sentence but does not erase the conviction, unlike a full pardon.
