Ridley Scott’s New Post-Apocalyptic Movie The Dog Stars Gets a New Release Date
20th Century Studios and Disney have delayed the release of Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie, The Dog Stars. The film is based on the 2012 science-fiction novel by Peter Heller.
Ridley Scott announced the project in November 2024, saying it would be his next movie after Gladiator II. The story is set in a future where most of humanity has been wiped out by a deadly pandemic. It follows a man who lives alone with his dog and a gun, until he hears a mysterious radio message that suggests other people—or possible enemies—are still alive.
New Release Date Confirmed
According to reports, The Dog Stars will now be released on August 28, 2026. The movie was originally scheduled to come out on March 27, 2026, but that date has been given to another film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
The film is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce.
Summer Release Instead of Spring
Originally, The Dog Stars was set to release shortly after Project Hail Mary, another big sci-fi movie starring Ryan Gosling. By moving the release to late August, the studio is avoiding heavy competition from major spring releases.
Now, The Dog Stars will arrive at the end of the summer movie season. It will open on the same day as:
-
A reboot of Cliffjumper directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
-
The long-awaited Coyote vs. Acme, which is finally getting a theatrical release
Why the Delay Could Be a Good Thing
Ridley Scott is one of the most respected directors in film history, especially known for sci-fi classics like Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian. However, some of his recent sci-fi films, such as Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, received mixed reactions from fans.
Moving The Dog Stars to late summer may show that the studio believes in the movie’s box office potential. It also helps avoid strong competition in April from big films like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, The Mummy, and Michael.
Ridley Scott’s Recent Track Record
In recent years, Ridley Scott’s movies have had mixed results:
-
The Last Duel was highly praised but failed at the box office
-
House of Gucci received mixed reviews but performed well after theaters reopened
-
Gladiator II was not as iconic as the original but still succeeded financially
Fans are hoping that The Dog Stars will become Ridley Scott’s next big hit, both critically and financially—something he hasn’t achieved since The Martian.
