Award-winning creator and actress Michaela Coel is returning to television with a brand-new drama series titled First Day on Earth. The upcoming 10-part show is a major co-production between HBO and BBC, the same powerful partnership behind her breakout hit I May Destroy You.

With production officially underway, the series has added some impressive names to its cast, making it one of the most anticipated upcoming HBO dramas.

The new HBO and BBC drama will feature:

What Is First Day on Earth About?

First Day on Earth follows Coel’s character, Henri, an author who is struggling with her personal life. She feels lost and overwhelmed, trying to escape from herself, her relationship, and even someone from her book tour.

Her journey takes her back to Ghana, her ancestral homeland. There, she hopes to find peace and a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a new world full of friendships, love, joy, and self-discovery. At the same time, Henri uncovers family secrets, painful truths, and hidden lies that force her to question her identity and heritage.

The story promises to explore themes like family, culture, belonging, trauma, and personal growth — all told through Coel’s deeply personal and emotional writing style.

In a statement, Coel shared how excited she is to reunite with HBO and the BBC. She described the project as very personal and expressed hope that audiences around the world will connect with Henri’s journey.

Michaela Coel Also Prepares for Mother Mary Release

While working on First Day on Earth, Coel is also preparing for the release of her upcoming psychological thriller, Mother Mary.

The film is directed by David Lowery, known for his visually striking film The Green Knight.

The movie stars Anne Hathaway as a famous pop star who reconnects with her former best friend and costume designer, played by Coel, just before her big comeback concert.

Director Lowery has described the film as bold, emotional, and unpredictable. He hinted that it will spark strong reactions from audiences, calling it one of his most personal and surprising projects.
