Netflix’s Long-Delayed Fantasy Series Agent From Above Finally Gets 2026 Release Window
After nearly seven years of waiting, Netflix’s most ambitious Asian action fantasy series, Agent From Above, has finally received a promising release update. The highly anticipated show is now confirmed to arrive on Netflix in Q2 2026, most likely between April and June.
Netflix has produced many popular fantasy shows over the years, including The Witcher, Shadow & Bone, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, Agent From Above aims to go even further with its large-scale visual effects, deep mythology, and rich world-building inspired by Taoist folklore.
What Is Agent From Above About?
Agent From Above is based on Taoist mythology and blends supernatural folklore with modern urban fantasy. The story follows Han Chieh, a spirit medium bound by a divine pact. His mission is to maintain balance between the human world and the demon realm.
When Han Chieh discovers that an old enemy is planning a second demonic invasion, he must face powerful supernatural forces to protect humanity and restore balance before it’s too late.
Official Synopsis:
Bound by a deity’s pact, Han Chieh fights demons on Earth. When he uncovers an old enemy’s plan for a second invasion, he must fight to save humanity.
Why Did the Series Take So Long?
The series first entered production in 2019 and was initially expected to release in 2023. However, several major challenges caused long delays:
-
Global COVID-19 lockdowns
-
Extremely complex and heavy VFX work
-
A continuously increasing budget, making it one of Taiwan’s most expensive shows ever
-
Lead actor Kai Ko suffering a serious injury during a stunt
Because of these issues, Netflix decided to delay the release to ensure the show meets high production standards. Now, with filming and post-production finally complete and Kai Ko fully recovered, the series is ready for release.
A Star-Studded Taiwanese Cast and Creative Team
Agent From Above features some of Taiwan’s most talented actors, including:
-
Kai Ko (You Are the Apple of My Eye, Kung Fu)
-
Wang Po-chieh (Life of Pi, The Embers)
-
Buffy Chen (The Silent Forest)
-
Johnny Yang (Warrior, The Rip)
-
Hsueh Shih-ling (Taiwan Crime Stories)
The series is directed by Kuan Wei-chieh and Lai Chun-yu, with Melvin Ang and Rita Chuang serving as executive producers.
Netflix Calls It a “Visual Tour de Force”
Netflix has high confidence in Agent From Above, describing it as:
“A visual tour de force that delivers spectacular world-building and artistry, setting a new benchmark that stands shoulder to shoulder with high-end fantasy productions globally.”
The show is also part of Netflix’s larger Chinese-language content slate for 2026, focusing on bold storytelling and creative risks.
Netflix’s Vision for Chinese-Language Stories
Maya Huang, Head of Chinese Language Content at Netflix, shared Netflix’s vision for future projects:
“Chinese-language storytelling is singular in its vibrancy, emotional depth, and willingness to explore complex, darker human truths. We’re excited to take creative risks and bring audiences into extraordinary worlds.”
