Naruto Live-Action Movie May Have Found Its First Major Mission — Is the Land of Waves Arc Coming?

The long-awaited live-action Naruto movie may finally be revealing where its story will begin. While Lionsgate and filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton have not officially announced which storyline the film will adapt, a newly reported plot synopsis points toward one of the most important early missions involving Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura.

And if the clues are accurate, fans could be heading straight toward the Land of Waves arc.

The Naruto Movie Is Reportedly Centered on Team 7’s First Mission

According to a recent report from Knight Edge Media, the live-action movie's plot synopsis describes Naruto Uzumaki as a young ninja recruit who is assigned to his first mission alongside Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno.

The mission reportedly begins as something that sounds relatively straightforward but eventually becomes much more dangerous. Naruto is also expected to confront the mysterious power inside him, with the synopsis teasing the literal demon connected to his abilities.

The important detail here is the phrase “first mission.”

The report does not officially name the mission, meaning the exact storyline being adapted remains unconfirmed. However, that description immediately brings one particular arc from the original Naruto manga and anime into focus.

Could the Live-Action Movie Adapt the Land of Waves Arc?

In the original story, Team 7's first major mission outside the Hidden Leaf Village takes them to the Land of Waves.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are assigned to protect Tazuna, an older bridge builder who needs to return safely to his homeland. What initially appears to be a simple escort mission quickly turns into a dangerous confrontation with enemy ninja.

The mission eventually introduces two characters who remain among the most memorable figures from Naruto's early story: Zabuza Momochi and Haku.

The official Naruto site describes the Land of Waves storyline as Team 7's first mission outside the Hidden Leaf Village, where the young ninja experience a genuine life-or-death battle for the first time.

That makes the arc a natural candidate for a first live-action movie.

Why the Land of Waves Story Makes Sense for the Movie

The Land of Waves arc has something a live-action adaptation needs: a relatively focused story with a clear beginning, escalation and conclusion.

Rather than attempting to introduce years of Naruto mythology in a single movie, the story could establish the central characters through one dangerous assignment.

Naruto's relationship with Sasuke and Sakura could develop naturally during the mission, while Kakashi Hatake would remain an important part of Team 7's early journey.

The arc also gives the movie an opportunity to show audiences that being a ninja is not simply about flashy techniques and battles. Naruto's first major mission forces Team 7 to face fear, loss, responsibility and the harsh realities of the shinobi world.

Zabuza and Haku Could Be Major Parts of the Story

If the movie does adapt the Land of Waves storyline, Zabuza and Haku could become central characters.

Destin Daniel Cretton Is Leading the Live-Action Adaptation

The Naruto movie is being developed by Lionsgate, with Destin Daniel Cretton attached to write and direct.

Cretton was officially announced for the project in February 2024. The filmmaker is known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the official Naruto announcement confirmed that the film would be based on Masashi Kishimoto's manga.

The project has now moved further into pre-production.

In July 2026, Lionsgate and the filmmakers launched a worldwide casting search for the young actors who will play Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Kishimoto also shared his excitement about seeing his characters brought to the big screen in live action.

The Movie Still Hasn't Officially Confirmed the Arc

This is the most important distinction for fans.

The reported synopsis says the story follows Team 7 on Naruto's first mission, but it does not explicitly say “Land of Waves.” The connection comes from comparing the reported description with the original manga and anime, where Team 7's first major mission is the Land of Waves storyline.

So, for now, Zabuza and Haku should not be treated as confirmed movie characters.

The Land of Waves theory is compelling, but the filmmakers still have the opportunity to change the mission, combine story elements or create a new version of Naruto's early journey for the live-action format.
